Infographic: Road Accident Cost and DataFromSky

road death chart with a skyrocketing
Infographic preview

Did you know that as a result of traffic accidents, 1 250 000 people die each year? If you want to put it differently, 3 500 every day… There is also the fact that these numbers may keep rising:

That’s why there are numerous initiatives and organizations working on increasing road safety – eg. International Road Assessment Programme, UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, Inter-American Development Bank Road Safety Strategy, World Bank Global Road Safety Facility, Global Road Safety Partnership of Red Cross and Red Crescent, FIA Foundation – just to name a few. The list goes on and on.

Among other benefits, DataFromSky can help assess safety of intersections. To communicate this easily to the general public as well as potential customers, we created an infographic.

Recently, we created a Facebook page, so if you didn’t find the other social networks useful, maybe you will this one… Here is the complete list, anyway:

If you wish to contact us thus, keep in mind that it might take a little longer than by plain email. We try our best to keep an eye on Twitter as much as possible, and the rest are valid choices as well of course!

DronEzine.it mentions DataFromSky and Smart Mobility World 2015

DronEzine Logo sm DronEzine, an Italian electronic drone magazine, published an article dedicated to Smart Mobility World 2015. This year, a section will be dedicated to drone use in the field of traffic, intelligent transport systems and mobility. The article mentioned DataFromSky: “All over the world, the businesses that use UAV for this kind of mission have proliferated, such as DataFromSky, to mention just one name“.

We are happy to be mentioned, since we are planning to participate again this year, after our participation last year in Turin. The 2015 edition will start on 28th October at the Italian F1 circuit in Monza, conveniently located in time and space near the end of Expo 2015. Don’t hesitate and come!

Road design – more important than you think

Alan Sackrin, Florida based Civil Trial Lawyer, published an article about the importance of road design and its influence on road crash statistics.

Current conditions of roadways and their design – these two factors play a major role in number of car accidents. There are times when people are seriously injured or even killed in auto accidents on a traffic path where the design itself causes danger mentions Alan Sackrin.

Transportation is one of global issues and the road traffic accidents death rate is annually increasing. DataFromSky wants to fight against this problem by providing advanced safety analysis. Join us to keep our roads well-designed and safe!

Motorcycle traffic monitoring and interaction research

Every now and then, an unique and interesting use case for DataFromSky comes up. The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering at National Technical University of Athens is planning to use DataFromSky for traffic monitoring – to study interactions between powered two-wheelers (PTW) and other vehicles. They have already published a number of papers, dealing with powered two-wheelers’ overtaking in context of game theory or modelling based on multivariate statistics [1][2].

The smaller size of PTWs makes it possible to keep moving and overtaking even in conditions where cars are immobilized. In some countries, PTWs are either a dominant form of traffic, or take up a large share. Given these facts, there is a lot of opportunities to build a better understanding of their interactions – and hopefully also safety in these situations.

Below is a short video which we analyzed as a demonstration for the Greek scientists.

Drone traffic monitoring demonstration in Netherlands

At the beginning of July, sUAS news reported about drone traffic monitoring demonstration in Netherlands.

front page of magazine

Traffic technology International, an international web-and-print magazine, published in their June/July 2015 issue an article about UAV-based road traffic monitoring based on the Netherlands event under the title Farewell to fixed cameras?.

While the one-off demonstration showcased real-time monitoring, not analysis, it is an application of UAVs in traffic nevertheless. The article title is especially poignant for us, since drones can replace fixed cameras for both monitoring and analysis.

Meanwhile, another monitoring application is on the horizon: “The Jakarta City police to use drones to monitor traffic”. Doubtless, many more are to come…

ISO 39001 Road Safety seminar mentions DataFromSky

At the end of July, our Italian partner, Andrea Marella of Traficlab.eu, led an online seminar about road safety titled “Road traffic safety (RTS) management system standard“. DataFromSky was mentioned as one of the best ways to gather information about driver behaviour and safety.

During 2012 the International Organization for Standardization published a new standard called: ISO 39001:2012 – Road traffic safety (RTS) management systems – Requirements with guidance for use. The ISO provides a tool to help organizations to reduce and ultimately to eliminate the incidence and risk of death and serious injury related to road traffic crashes.

The webinar in question offered the following information and training:

  • Road safety concepts
  • Road risk factors
  • ISO 39001:2012 standard requirements
  • Road traffic safety (RTS) in the management systems
  • Guidelines for auditing a RTS management system

DataFromSky was mentioned as a great source of data, and we must agree. The conflict heatmaps from simulation on next slide are exactly what we can deliver! Furthermore, we can do this from real data.

Stay tuned for more news about road safety…

Venice – Final analysis

You probably remember the recording in Venice: Blimp recording in Venice, Recording in Venice in detail. We have obtained permission to share some of the results, so we can show you what can DataFromSky do for you, too!

Speed profile

The speed profiles for both areas were extracted.

At a glance, one can see what speeds belong to which path through the crossroads. It is also plainly visible which trajectories belong to slow and which to speedy drivers. In this case, the total area captured and analyzed is too small to show bigger changes in speeds, though.

Speed profile, Caposile roundabout

Speed profile, Portegrandi T-intersection

Area coverage

Density of trajectories corresponds to area usage. One can thus estimate how much of the road’s width is actually used by passing vehicles, and where the wear of roadway is most intensive.

Conflict areas

DataFromSky can detect situations where vehicles become too close, or have to slow down to let each other pass. This is a visualization of these events’ spatial distribution. You can easily see that there is a single point for the T-intersection and estimate from the pattern at roundabout that its southern leg is far less used.

Deflection and radius analysis

Deflection angle and radius analysis, Caposile roundabout

Deflection angle denotes the part of road which requires circular movement. Radius describes the size of that circle. Both can relate either to the shape of road, or actual trajectory used by vehicles.

DataFromSky provides real vehicle trajectories, so actual deflection angles and radii can be measured. These depend on the combination of entry and exit points, so it’s natural to split the trajectories into groups. Again, with DataFromSky you are not left wishing for features.

Road design validation

Road design validation, Portegrandi T-intersection

Last but not least, the trajectory data from DataFromSky is exactly what you need to validate design of the road. Whatever the design process, verifications, and modelling tell you before, here you get real data about the situation.

Pictures used in this post are only illustrative and do not match the text perfectly. All trajectories are visualized, instead of particular groups.
