Traffic Behavior and Safety study in Denmark

In many cities, there are places where many road users pass or stay in a complicated network of routes and get into a risky interaction. It can be difficult to get an overview of the whole situation and define the “hot spots” where the traffic behavior is simply non-standard. Our tool Data From Sky is in most cases be able to uncover, sort and analyze all movements of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in a larger area and evaluate critical parts of a road network, that might be risky for any traffic participant. This kind of overview and analysis can give traffic and urban planners a very good starting point for designing any adjustments.

The figure below shows an area in the city of Aarhus in Denmark and displays the flow of cyclists (pink trajectories) and pedestrians (green trajectories) in the 2-hour period. The main goal of the analysis is to provide the Aarhus Municipality with an overview of cyclists and pedestrian movement in the analyzed area and identify some patterns in their traffic behavior.

After having formed a detailed overview of all the different flows and routes, author of this study (Birger Villadsen, Traffic Specialist at COWI) has focused on those areas, where cyclists’ and pedestrians’ behavior gets into a collision. The detailed DataFromSky Analysis helped to analyze the problematic spots and draw up proposals for changes, that can help to simplify the traffic flow. Aarhus Municipality will evaluate the list of proposals and test them on the site by making temporary changes and observing whether they have the intended effect before the changes are implemented permanently.

Amazing results of DataFromSky Light service!

Have you already tried our new service DataFromSky Light – fully automatic analysis of traffic from static cameras? Not yet? Try it now for free!
Get the precise traffic data fast and reliable just in 3 steps:
1) record the traffic using a camera or simply your phone (to reach the best results, follow the instructions in this video)
2) upload your video to WeTransfer.com and send it to analyze@datafromsky.com
3) receive your results together with DataFromSky Light software and enjoy your data (various features for user: counts, OD-matrix, visualizations, many export functions, classification of objects, trajectories and much more)!

Take a look at a great example of the DFS Light analysis – our software easily handles and can analyze such traffic conditions prevailing e.g. in India. Could you count all of the motorbikes? We can, in a while!

DataFromSky Light is now out!

Christmas is just around the corner and we have prepared a special gift for you. An alpha version of our new service DataFromSky Light is now available for all traffic analysis enthusiasts! We have moved closer to the ground to make the awesome features of the DataFromSky closer to you as well. Fully automatic traffic data extraction from various “ground” video sources can be now smoothly and quickly delivered to you using the DataFromSky Light service. Rethink the traffic studies with our free video analytic tools, rethink the way you explore traffic!

The DataFromSky Light is an online service that processes traffic-related video data captured by smartphones, camcorders or highway surveillance cameras. It detects, classifies and tracks traffic objects in any video source. The following traffic object classes are supported:

  • pedestrian
  • bicycle
  • motorcycle
  • car
  • heavy vehicle

Video and result data exchange is performed via WeTransfer sharing service. How to use the DataFromSky Light service can be seen in the following video:

The results of the traffic analysis are provided in our TLGX format and can be viewed using a new lightweight license-free version of the DataFromSky Viewer called DataFromSky Viewer Light. The DataFromSky Viewer Light can visualize the spatial-temporal data that can be interactively examined in the whole analyzed time interval. The DataFromSky Viewer Light has the most of the licensed DataFromSky Viewer version functionality including:

  • traffic objects counting
  • directional/selective gate counting
  • O/D matrix counting
  • capacity estimation
  • headway statistics computation
  • gap time computation
  • time to follow computation
  • target time computation
  • trajectories visualization
  • heat-map visualization
  • export of the trajectories in various formats (.csv, .trj, .xlsx)
  • snapshot/video render export

The DataFromSky Light can process data from any video input such as static/handheld consumer camera video recording or a video capture from an existing video infrastructure (i.e. surveillance cameras). For the best traffic analysis results we recommend the following input video parameters:

  • resolution: 1280×720 or more (min. PAL)
  • bitrate: 5 Mb/s or more
  • framerate: 25 or more
  • min. traffic object size: 32px in one dimension
  • continuous video without cuts
  • no camera movement

The service can provide accurate results even beyond these parameters. We also recommend minimizing occlusions in the view on the scene in order to maximize the traffic analysis accuracy. For the post process traffic analysis in the DataFromSky Viewer Light software, it is useful for the input video to be as stable as possible with the area of the interest kept in the view throughout the whole video capture process to prevent a misleading gate counting since the video is not georegistered.

DFS light news not suitable
Picture 2: Not suitable scene views for the DataFromSky Light service (commented from the top left to bottom right – rotated; intended for DataFromSky Aerial; a lot of partial occlusions; big moving objects causing enormous occlusions)

There is no registration needed in order to use the DataFromSky Light. Free usage of the service is limited to 5 videos per day per one e-mail address. The maximum length of 2 hours per video can be analyzed for free as well. For the unlimited DataFromSky Light access please contact info@datafromsky.com. Try and see for free.

DataFromSky presented at RMS Bridge Conference

In the first week of December 2018, the annual RMS Bridge Conference was held in Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia. One of the main topics was „Smart Technology for Bridges” where a concept of using drones with Aerial Artificial Intelligence (DataFromSky software) in bridge inspection was presented. Besides the new application field in bridge inspection, other use cases of DataFromSky were shown by Houman Hatamian (traffic monitoring, perimeter surveillance, pedestrian monitoring etc.). The presentation on this event, that attended more than 350 participants this year, was received with a very positive response!
