The whole team of DataFromsky is happy to announce that the Technological Agency of Czech Republic has supported our project in the international programme “Delta”. We have succeeded with a project called “Traffic management platform development for big social events using a drone based on visual sensing techniques”.
The aim of the project is to develop an aerial artificial intelligence – a comprehensive mobile platform for real-time monitoring of traffic and big social events, using a UAV and advanced methods of computer vision based on artificial intelligence. The goal of is to develop a fast-deployable system for real-time surveillance of the defined area with automatic object recognition and classification, monitoring and automatic motion evaluation. Extracted image data will be analyzed in order to detect some nonstandard behavior, congestion, zone disturbance, and other user-defined parameters. Traffic data will be used for the immediate evaluation of traffic using simulations. The system has a high potential of being deployed in the traffic monitoring segment (police drone) or in a security field.
The novelty of the solution is in the implementation of intelligent UAV, which will provide information about moving objects during the flight operation, and interpret this data in the context of a particular application. This highly mobile platform is used wherever it is necessary to analyze the real-time situation.
The project is a multidisciplinary task that combines the latest trends in mobile robotics (UAV), computer vision, and automated telemetry analysis. The system will be integrated into a higher unit to evaluate traffic situations and traffic plans based on simulations.
Massive progress we have made in DataFromSky! As we keep on further development of DataFromSky solution, we can now boast great successes in the field of automatic detection from a moving UAV!
Imagine that you can directly detect and count the vehicles in traffic congestions while flying a drone over the traffic node! Impossible? Not anymore – since this moment, DataFromSky can detect and analyze vehicles from a flying UAV and provide information about the total number of vehicles and its category. Knowing such valuable information in real time, one can immediately predict the length of delay in the traffic congestion or the length of the tailback itself.
The success rate of the detection exceeds 95,67 % and the detection works on 12 828 CUDA cores – the image is evaluated in 200 ms.
See the video below, showing the raw data output from the detector – the data is not additionally modified in any way (no tracking, no filtration), however, even with the raw output we reached such a high accuracy of detection. Further data processing (tracking, etc.) will make the output even more accurate!
At the beginning of July, sUAS news reported about drone traffic monitoring demonstration in Netherlands.
Traffic technology International, an international web-and-print magazine, published in their June/July 2015 issue an article about UAV-based road traffic monitoring based on the Netherlands event under the title Farewell to fixed cameras?.
While the one-off demonstration showcased real-time monitoring, not analysis, it is an application of UAVs in traffic nevertheless. The article title is especially poignant for us, since drones can replace fixed cameras for both monitoring and analysis.
Meanwhile, another monitoring application is on the horizon: “The Jakarta City police to use drones to monitor traffic”. Doubtless, many more are to come…
