DataFromSky in Danish TV!

We are continuously working on traffic behavior analysis of traffic participants in surrounding of schools and kindergartens in Denmark. DataFromSky together with COWI has created another data-rich analysis of traffic behavior nearby a school in Vejle Municipality. The analysis maps traffic near the school during the morning rush hour when many students arrive at school at the same time. It also gives a complex overview, where potential conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians and cars may happen.

Based on the analysis and its outputs, it is easier to formulate some changes which should be adopted by schools to protect the safety of schoolchildren. This analysis can also lead to better decision making done by municipalities, whether to build a new crossing or add some safety features or how it is possible to change an established behavior that is dangerous or inappropriate.

DataFromSky analyzes busy traffic in India!

Take a look at our latest traffic analysis coming from India! DataFromSky has again proven its capabilities by carrying out the analysis of a very busy intersection in the city of Gururgram in India. The traffic flow was 507 tracked vehicles and motorcycles in just 1,5 minutes long video sequence; with regard to that, the average flow would reach up to 20,000 vehicles per hour!

Another feature that is worth mentioning and you can notice it in the video is the permanent blurring of some parts of the video. From now on, you can permanently blur the input video directly in the DataFromSky Viewer!

    Safety analysis using data from 8 drones at once!

    Another great project has been accomplished, among other things, thanks to DataFromSky analysis! DataFromSky has made a traffic study of a corridor in the city of Fairfield in Connecticut, U.S.. The data were used for an extensive Safety analysis of the whole corridor called Black Rock Turnpike. The study, created by The Connecticut Metropolitan Council of Governments (MetroCOG) and FHI, identifies strategies to create a safe and attractive pedestrian environment, a robust infrastructure for bicyclists, and linkages between residential areas and the shops, businesses and restaurants along Black Rock Turnpike.

    Black Rock Turnpike is a major arterial that serves one of the city’s largest business and commercial districts. According to the estimates, approximately 20,000 vehicles utilize this corridor every day. As the results of the analysis show – although Black Rock Turnpike has a posted speed limit of 50 km/h (30 miles/h), the average speeds are between 55 – 65 km/h (35-40 miles/h). The road widths, speed, high traffic volume and numerous curb cuts create an unsafe and uninviting pedestrian environment. Click on this link to read more about the whole project.

    Analyzed area

    However, what is truly remarkable about this analysis is the method how the data were recorded and analyzed. To be able to cover the whole corridor, which is roughly 1,3 km in length, up to 8 drones recording at the same time were needed! This allowed us to analyze the corridor as a complex scene, obtain the complete trajectories of vehicles for the whole analyzed route and create the detailed Origin-destination statistics! What were the key conditions for the successful analysis?

    1. top-down view position (bird’s eye perspective)
    2. space overlap – at least 10 % of overlap in the analyzed area from each side
    3. time overlap – all the drones started filming at the exact same time

    DataFromSky attended the event called Smart Startup Day organized by ČSOB (Československá obchodní banka, a. s.) and held on 26. 2. 2018 in Prague.

      COWI presents DataFromSky on Transportforum in Sweden

      On January 10-11, Transportforum – the Nordic region’s largest annual conference within the transport sector, will be held in Linköping, Sweden. At the conference, researchers and stakeholders meet for knowledge sharing and benchmarking.

      COWI, our partner in the Nordic countries, will be present with a stand (number 28) and give several lectures. On Wednesday January 10 at 15:30-17:00 Mathias Sdun, Chief Specialist at COWI, will talk about risks associated with bus stops based on analyses conducted using DataFromSky (read our recent article). Mathias will also explain how DataFromSky analysis can give us detailed information about road user’s behavior before some accidents really happen and thus give us the possibility to act preventively.

      Complex traffic study in Netherlands

      When carrying out a complex traffic study, it may be difficult to map the entire traffic situation, especially with traditional methods. Using a solution in form of traffic research from air with a drone and DataFromSky software, all movements are recorded down and analyzed to the smallest detail for unlimited data. In addition to junctions and road sections, the system is also suitable for parking areas, events, station environments or terminals.

      The benefits of traffic research from the aerial video:

Moreover, it is fairly easy to evaluate, or use the results immediately in programs for traffic simulation models such as VISSIM.

      Our partner in the BENELUX region – Roelofs – has recently carried out such complex traffic analysis accross the Netherlands using the drones to analyse the crossroads – especially roundabouts and signalized intersections.

      Speed-based trajectories in the analyzed area

      The results obtained thanks to DataFromSky were further used to create a simulation model in VISSIM, using the real data about: vehicle categories, speed and acceleration in crossroad, intensities on each lane, vehicle gap time and origin destination statistics.       Traffic monitoring in Mexico City!

      New traffic analysis from Mexico city.
      The visualization video is showing capabilities of DataFromSky in very high traffic flow, where the density reaches 9 000 vehicles per hour!
      Video displays IDs and categories of tracked objects (car, medium and heavy vehicle, bus, motocycle), current speed and acceleration, stationary time, traffic counting through gates, trajectories visualization and heatmaps based on average speed and acceleration.

      DataFromSky traffic analysis in United Arab Emirates

      DataFromSky has recently analyzed several traffic videos collected in United Arab Emirates, near cities of Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Output from one of these analysis may be seen below, or on our Vimeo channel. This analysis proves, that our system is adapted and capable of analyzing the videos in various weather conditions, including very dusty or sandy environment such the one in Emirates, as proven in the video.

      Moreover, in recent times, our team of DataFromSky is working on development of realtime UAV solution – drone analyzer, that will be able to provide accurate traffic data right off. The main objective is to design the cutting edge technology: an UAV based solution for the purpose of active traffic management over a road network. The solution will be capable of providing real time video monitoring and traffic data collection on the road, starting with the simple vehicle counting, monitoring of traffic density, actual speed and acceleration, up to the vehicle number plate recognition. One of the specific and useful feature will be possibility to identify near accidents and collisions (identify dangerous behaviour of road users, slow moving traffic, stopped vehicles, traffic jam etc.).

      Complete traffic analysis in Dalmine, Italy

      DataFromSky in cooperation with Trafficlab, conducted an important and complex traffic analysis in Italy, over the motorway junction of Dalmine (Bergamo), near the A4 motorway (Torino – Trieste), and the highway SS470. With the aid of a special balloon (Immagini al Volo) and DataFromSky, it was possible to obtain a complete picture of the performance of the vehicles during the morning peak hours (7.00 – 9.00).

      In particular, the studied elements are 4 junctions: 3 roundabout and 1 multi-level junction, directly connected to the motorway.

      Through the traffic flows obtained, it was possible to create an OD-matrix for every junction and for every type of vehicle (bicycles, motorcycles, cars, medium vehicles, high vehicles, buses), to extrapolate information about the behaviour of every vehicle, such as acceleration, speed, time gap, time to follow; all these data are available for every route and every type of vehicle. The acceleration and the maximum and minimum speed values represent a valid help for the creation of a traffic simulation on the junction that were considered. The results are great with a minimum difference between the number of entering vehicles and the number of exiting vehicles (it has to be considered that the surveys were conducted in different times and days).

      Another peculiarity of this tool is to give the possibility to elaborate vehicle’s trajectories with a GIS software. The trajectories are connected to a geo-database that contains all the information about the vehicle and its behaviour (shape files).

      It is interesting to focus on the incorrect behaviour of road users with the help of the object presence alert, the new special feature of DataFromSky Viewer. For example, it was possible to see that a vehicle crossed the roundabout in the opposite direction!

      Finally, thanks to an in-depth analysis of the Copert model about pollutant emissions, it was possible to define the quantities of pollutants released into the atmosphere by the traffic flow of the considered area: CO [kg], Non methane VOC – HC [kg], PM [kg], NOx [kg], CO2[kg] e Fuel Consumption [kg].
