DataFromSky analyzed city center in Trondheim, Norway

Due to the introduction of the Metro bus system in Trondheim, our of the main streets leading into and through the city center will be redesigned. Elgeseter gate, which is the main road to the city center from the south is one of these streets. Over 22 000 vehicles drive through the street every day and approximately 100 buses pass in each direction in the peak hour. The street gives access to the University Hospital as well as the university in Trondheim, offices and residences. DataFromSky Partner – COWI – is making a zoning plan for the street and will do an analysis of different design alternatives. DataFromSky delivers in-depth analysis of the whole corridor in order to get knowledge about traffic flows, both cars, pedestrians and bicycles.

New concept of future Berlin streets with DataFromSky Light

How to deal with busy streets in the center of Berlin? Buses, trams, cars, cyclists, pedestrians can be seen everywhere moving without any rules. Is it possible to build car-free, bicycle-friendly & human-oriented city? Macromedia University of Applied Science in Berlin did concentrate on this issue as a part of Master Course Smart City Design and DataFromSky played a key role in the process of analysis of traffic and behavioral patterns and creating proposals for design changes!

How was the whole concept proceed?
Different groups of objects have been defined at the beginning of the analysis. Then a video of chosen intersection or street was taken and analyzed by DataFromSky software. Based on these data new concept of the intersection/street was designed.

Students have chosen different places around Berlin for the analysis. We have decided to choose 3 of them as a Use Case of our DataFromSky Light service.

Crossing Redesign Analysis and Concept
This analysis was done for an Intersection of Köpenicker Straße and Manteuffelstraße. Video from this intersection was analyzed by DataFromSky to get number of objects. Based on obtained data new concept of the people-oriented street was designed. New concept includes 2-Way Bike lane with limited speed, lines for cars & buses with slowing elements and giant crosswalk in the middle of the intersection with light signalization that helps to manage the flow of all participants.

Car-Free & Bicycle-Friendly & Human-oriented place
One of the analysis was focused on the heavy used intersection of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimsthaler Straße nearby Berlin city center. The aim of this analysis was to design car-free, bicycle-friendly & human-oriented place. Thanks to DataFromSky software most common vehicle, bicycle paths and pedestrians movements were identified and based on these data new concept of car-free place was designed. Car-free Concept
Aim of this analysis was to analyze and design new car-free concept of Bergmanstrasse in Bergmannkiez. The objects (such as Cars, Bicycles and Motorcycles) were analyzed by DataFromSky software – counted, analyzed the trajectories, behavior patterns etc. Based on this analysis new concept of street lanes were defined. DataFromSky Aerial analysis in the Netherlands

ROELOFS, an exclusive partner of DataFromSky in the Netherlands, carried out comprehensive traffic research of a traffic node in the province of Gelderland. The data collected with a drone and analyzed by DataFromSky Aerial platform will be used as the main source for a study for planned major maintenance in 2021.

The drone was deployed at the roundabout of the N318 Misterweg in Winterswijk. When preparing for the major maintenance of this road, it is also being examined whether road safety can be improved. Besides other things, DataFromSky offers many great features for analysis of traffic behavior and road safety, including analysis of risky situations or near collisions, calculation of Time to Collision, Heavy Breaking and analysis of many other factors.
For many years, the data were collected by people standing on the side and observing the traffic, then the data were evaluated manually. This process was lengthy, inefficient, and had low-precision data output. All of these shortcomings are overtaken with a new modern approach combining 2 great technologies of today world: drones and AI.

We have moved from the Sky to the Ski!
With our newly released DataFromSky Light, we are testing the software in unusual conditions and scenarios. Counting how many skiers are on the slopes? Not a problem at all.     How advanced image analysis is contributing to optimize urban mobility?

    A very good summarizing article about the capabilities of DataFromSky and how the advanced image data processing is contributing to optimize the urban mobility has been published on LinkedIn. Several use cases in which the data from the sky might be helpful are described by this article:

    DataFromSky measures speeding

    New video analysis comes from Czech Republic and measures the speeding!
    In this demonstration survey, we tracked 204 vehicles which traveled 114 kilometers in total, averaging 555 m per vehicle. The average speed was 34,5 kph.

    The video is displaying the sections with maximal speed allowed and highlights vehicles that have exceeded this speed. In the DataFromSky Viewer, you can create such a measured area simply using a polygon, where you can define the conditions under which the alert should appear (e.g. to which categories of vehicles does the rule apply, speed range etc.).

    Study of bicycle and pedestrian movement in Denmark

    John F. Kennedy’s Square in city of Aalborg in Denmark is with the railway station and bus terminal an important traffic hub that connects Aalborg to the surrounding towns and most of the bigger cities in country. With Aalborg Municipality’s desire and strategy to change the habits and move citizens from cars to bicycle and public transport, large space problems have arisen in connection with parking spaces for bicycles. The bike rails are crowded and illegally parked bikes fill up the street scene and create dangerous pedestrian situations.

    In order to find the optimal location of bicycle parking facilities, the movement patterns of each traffic participant, especially pedestrians and bicycles, were analyzed using DataFromSky advanced software – see the pictures attached below, representing the trajectories of bicycles (blue) and pedestrians (green). Based on these patterns, detailed data, statistics and trajectories information, COWI has performed a study examining where it will be possible to implement more parking places for bicycles in and around the square, resulting with a proposal for how the space can be furnished – offering more space for bicycle parking and rest areas for pedestrians.
    DataFromSky analysis has also resulted in illustrations of average speed of pedestrians in this square. The data were used to design areas where pedestrians typically stop and where there may be a need for seating (e.g. near the bus station), moreover, these information and data are extremely valuable for a safety study in a given zone, which can be adopted by the municipality to make some changes in order to increase the safety of pedestrians and bicycles in analyzed area.

    New possibility of recording aerial video: special traffic balloon!

    DataFromSky introduces new way how to record video to obtain high-quality data for advanced traffic analysis. New, specially developed balloon for accurate data collection brings many advantages, including:

  • Fixed long-term monitoring (usable in persistant traffic monitoring, perimeter security)
  • Up to 3 hours of operating time
  • Transmits data in HD resolution
  • Stabilized optical system – 4k image resolution
  • Maximal reachable altitude: 200 meteres
  • Covered area: up to 300 000 sq.m. (from max. altitude)
  • Fast deployment: in 25 minutes

  • The camera is attached to a balloon inflated with gas – 3m3 of helium. This solution is very good alternative in cases, where using a drone is limited and too difficult to get authorizations. One of the biggest benefit of recording the video with the balloon is the time, for which it can be in the operating mode. Compared to standard drones, which often lasts in the air only 25 to 40 minutes, this balloon is able to hover over the intersection / traffic node for up to 3 hours and thus can provide very informative and interesting data. In this way one can have a wider vision that allows to report potentially critical situations and to find out how to solve them.

    Traffic monitoring in Denmark – the land of bikes

    Recently we got to analyzing a video of a roundabout in Roskilde, Denmark. And because Denmark is called: The land of bikes, we didn’t focus only on vehicles but also on bikes! And here is the result of our traffic monitoring:

    Length of analyzed video: 15:38.48
    Number of objects being tracked: 298 (vehicles and bicycles)
    Total distance traveled: 79 354.4 m
    Average speed: 34.0233 km per hour
    Average distance on roundabout: 59.7474 m
