Another great project has been accomplished, among other things, thanks to DataFromSky analysis! DataFromSky has made a traffic study of a corridor in the city of Fairfield in Connecticut, U.S.. The data were used for an extensive Safety analysis of the whole corridor called Black Rock Turnpike. The study, created by The Connecticut Metropolitan Council of Governments (MetroCOG) and FHI, identifies strategies to create a safe and attractive pedestrian environment, a robust infrastructure for bicyclists, and linkages between residential areas and the shops, businesses and restaurants along Black Rock Turnpike.
Black Rock Turnpike is a major arterial that serves one of the city’s largest business and commercial districts. According to the estimates, approximately 20,000 vehicles utilize this corridor every day. As the results of the analysis show – although Black Rock Turnpike has a posted speed limit of 50 km/h (30 miles/h), the average speeds are between 55 – 65 km/h (35-40 miles/h). The road widths, speed, high traffic volume and numerous curb cuts create an unsafe and uninviting pedestrian environment. Click on this link to read more about the whole project.
However, what is truly remarkable about this analysis is the method how the data were recorded and analyzed. To be able to cover the whole corridor, which is roughly 1,3 km in length, up to 8 drones recording at the same time were needed! This allowed us to analyze the corridor as a complex scene, obtain the complete trajectories of vehicles for the whole analyzed route and create the detailed Origin-destination statistics! What were the key conditions for the successful analysis?
- top-down view position (bird’s eye perspective)
- space overlap – at least 10 % of overlap in the analyzed area from each side
- time overlap – all the drones started filming at the exact same time
Take a look at the video of raw output of 8 drone videos merged together:

When carrying out a complex traffic study, it may be difficult to map the entire traffic situation, especially with traditional methods. Using a solution in form of traffic research from air with a drone and DataFromSky software, all movements are recorded down and analyzed to the smallest detail for unlimited data. In addition to junctions and road sections, the system is also suitable for parking areas, events, station environments or terminals.
The benefits of traffic research from the aerial video:
- accurate data about traffic flow (counts), turning movements, speed, acceleration, travel time, stationary time (queing time) and many other traffic parameters
- reliable, detailed research without influencing traffic behavior (inconspicuous solution)
- full traffic research, almost without a human intervention
- tool to improve traffic safety
- perfect communication tool for organizations, citizens and politics
Simple insight into all data
The knowledge in form of a aerial video with exact traffic parameters, speed measurements and identification of inappropriate or dangerous behavior is a very powerful communication tool for organizations, citizens and politicians alike. Moreover, it is fairly easy to evaluate, or use the results immediately in programs for traffic simulation models such as VISSIM.
Our partner in the BENELUX region – Roelofs – has recently carried out such complex traffic analysis accross the Netherlands using the drones to analyse the crossroads – especially roundabouts and signalized intersections.
Speed-based trajectories in the analyzed area
The results obtained thanks to DataFromSky were further used to create a simulation model in VISSIM, using the real data about: vehicle categories, speed and acceleration in crossroad, intensities on each lane, vehicle gap time and origin destination statistics. This is the most accurate simulation you can achieve by using real world data! If you want to get more detailed information about the analysis results, click here .

DataFromSky – the world’s most advanced traffic analysis
It will also be demonstrated how advanced technologies such as computer vision, neural networking and deep learning can be used and implemented in the world’s most advanced software for comprehensive traffic analyzes and also how to utilize this solution to detect the occupancy of a parking lot in real time using an ordinary IP cameras and the AI behind.
One of the topics presented on this event will be the “Accident Portal” – new web-based analysis tool developed by COWI that gives the Danish municipalities completely new opportunities for quickly, efficiently and through a user-friendly interface to work with traffic accidents data. The team of DataFromSky is currently working on a project evaluating the safety of a traffic node to know the potentionally risky situation and detect near accidents and accidents. This feature could be possibly utilized in the Accident Portal mentioned above.
Unidentified object in the skies of Trento, Italy – Aliens? Most of the citizens and local journals could think that, read some of the local newspapers. Do not worry, there is no danger of alliens attack so far, DataFromSky has a simple and reasonable explanation!
Using a special balloon for traffic data collecting, new DataFromSky traffic analysis near the city of Trento in northern Italy was undertaken within last weeks. Specially designed ballon was used for a 3hour long study of traffic flow in the multilevel roundabout as shown in the attached image. This helium-filled balloon has many advantages for the persistent traffic monitoring, in comparison to commonly used drones and UAV, as the operating time of the balloon can reach up to 5 hours! Massive progress we have made in DataFromSky! As we keep on further development of DataFromSky solution, we can now boast great successes in the field of automatic detection from a moving UAV!
Imagine that you can directly detect and count the vehicles in traffic congestions while flying a drone over the traffic node! Impossible? Not anymore – since this moment, DataFromSky can detect and analyze vehicles from a flying UAV and provide information about the total number of vehicles and its category. Knowing such valuable information in real time, one can immediately predict the length of delay in the traffic congestion or the length of the tailback itself.
The success rate of the detection exceeds 95,67 % and the detection works on 12 828 CUDA cores – the image is evaluated in 200 ms.
See the video below, showing the raw data output from the detector – the data is not additionally modified in any way (no tracking, no filtration), however, even with the raw output we reached such a high accuracy of detection. Further data processing (tracking, etc.) will make the output even more accurate!
New traffic analysis from Mexico city.
The visualization video is showing capabilities of DataFromSky in very high traffic flow, where the density reaches 9 000 vehicles per hour!
Video displays IDs and categories of tracked objects (car, medium and heavy vehicle, bus, motocycle), current speed and acceleration, stationary time, traffic counting through gates, trajectories visualization and heatmaps based on average speed and acceleration.
Recently, DataFromSky has performed traffic analysis of another video from United Arab Emirates, Dubai! This huge multilevel intersection in the middle of the arabic desert, which you can see in the video below, was a challenging task due to the large area covered and the weather and climate environment with very dusty and sandy conditions. The object of the analysis was monitoring of traffic behaviour in this vast area with traffic density reaching almost 8 500 vehicles per hour!
As you may see in the video, large area of one busy cloverleaf near the city of Dubai was analyzed – the average length of one trajectory in the video reaches 800 meters.
If you regurarly follow our website, you may know, that we are still working on development of mobile solution, which will be capable of collecting and analyzing traffic data in real time. This smart UAV analyzer will be a subsystem of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The main objective is to design the cutting edge technology: an UAV based solution for the purpose of active traffic management over a road network.

How to apply multicriteria selection for all trajectories and choose only the ones you want? With DataFromSky Viewer – sofisticated software for advanced traffic data interpretation and visualization, you are able to create not only the simple Origin Destination Matrix, but with advanced setttings, the multi-criteria selection for the trajectories can be applied.
Following gif presents detailed process, how to do it:
Usecase shown in the gif
If you want to track particular path and see how many vehicles have used that combination, a selection tool can be used.
In step 1, selection criteria for Entry and Exit gate were defined and all the trajectories, which have not used this combination were removed. After this selection, 4 trajectories remain.
Step 2 – As we wanted to know, how many cars leaving the service station in the South exit will turn right on the crossroad, another selection critera was applied. This condition specifies that only trajectories, which have used the combination Entry gate: south exit of the service station and Exit gate: turning right on the traffic lights, will be shown. Finally, only 2 trajectories left, which fulfill all the above defined criteria.
Why is the multi-criteria selection useful?
– show only the trajectories you want
– monitor and analyze traffic behavior in a defined way
– monitor time cars spend in service station / facilities
– find traffic patterns, identify problematic zones
DataFromSky has recently analyzed several traffic videos collected in United Arab Emirates, near cities of Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Output from one of these analysis may be seen below, or on our Vimeo channel. This analysis proves, that our system is adapted and capable of analyzing the videos in various weather conditions, including very dusty or sandy environment such the one in Emirates, as proven in the video.
Moreover, in recent times, our team of DataFromSky is working on development of realtime UAV solution – drone analyzer, that will be able to provide accurate traffic data right off. The main objective is to design the cutting edge technology: an UAV based solution for the purpose of active traffic management over a road network. The solution will be capable of providing real time video monitoring and traffic data collection on the road, starting with the simple vehicle counting, monitoring of traffic density, actual speed and acceleration, up to the vehicle number plate recognition. One of the specific and useful feature will be possibility to identify near accidents and collisions (identify dangerous behaviour of road users, slow moving traffic, stopped vehicles, traffic jam etc.).
