DataFromSky cooperates with PTV Vissim

We are proud to announce that we have connected DataFromSky with a simulation model VISSIM! PTV Vissim is a microscopic multi-modal traffic flow simulation software package developed by PTV Group, first developed in 1992 and nowadays, Vissim is a global market leader in microscopic simulation models! The simulation displays all road users and their interactions in one model.

We have created a promo video demonstrating how to export the results from DataFromSky and use it as an input in Vissim. This possibility opens so many opportunities how to utilize the real data from DataFromSky analysis and how to increase the accuracy of your simulation model!

What kind of data can be exported and what are the plans for further interconnection?
– traffic counts
– vehicle category (number of cars, heavy vehicles, buses, motorcycles etc.)
– turning movements – route decisions and routes
– speeds for model calibration
– accelerations
– travel times (between two defined gates)
– headways between two vehicles following each other (gap in seconds) – advanced gap analysis and headways data provided only by DataFromSky!
– queue lengths (will be added)

The video plays also the role of the very first User manual video of DataFromSky Viewer – it describes the process of creating counting gates in order to export the Origin-destination data and import them into Vissim. Other short instructional videos will follow soon!

DataFromSky in Czech press

An article about DataFromSky appeared in Czech e-magazine Svět-chytře. This online newsletter focuses on smart solutions in various areas, including smart businesses, smart cities and municipalities, or smart government.

The article itself describes DataFromSky as a solution, which is often used to determine the traffic situation and evaluate the existing infrastructure, whether it is sufficient or not. Do you need a safety study of a particular traffic junction? Do you want to know the capacity of the roundabout? Analyze peak hours and driver’s behavior patterns in these critical periods in busy road segments? Or monitor a risky behavior of drivers on highways etc.?
The combination of drone technology for data collection and advanced video processing tool – DataFromSky – assists many users such as government entities and road agencies for effective traffic monitoring and management, police forces for continuous, precise and inconspicuous surveillance of the traffic situation, traffic engineers and many others. Because small UAVs can provide very good situational awareness from the bird’s eye perspective, it can be used in several situations in traffic monitoring, surveillance and control.
Besides traffic, the list of potential uses of DataFromSky technology goes on and on. There is congestion monitoring during mass events, crowd control during the demonstrations and strikes, perimeter surveillance and much more.

As the article summarize, our AAI (Aerial Artificial Intelligence) uses deep neural networks that are trained on millions of shots from junctions of all over the world, including Mexico, United Arab Emirates, the United States, India and other countries of the world. The machine learning is an ongoing process and the ability to automatically analyze and detect the objects in the video is constantly improved. Thanks to that, DataFromSky analysis reaches the accuracy over 98,5 %.

Safety analysis using data from 8 drones at once!

Another great project has been accomplished, among other things, thanks to DataFromSky analysis! DataFromSky has made a traffic study of a corridor in the city of Fairfield in Connecticut, U.S.. The data were used for an extensive Safety analysis of the whole corridor called Black Rock Turnpike. The study, created by The Connecticut Metropolitan Council of Governments (MetroCOG) and FHI, identifies strategies to create a safe and attractive pedestrian environment, a robust infrastructure for bicyclists, and linkages between residential areas and the shops, businesses and restaurants along Black Rock Turnpike.

Black Rock Turnpike is a major arterial that serves one of the city’s largest business and commercial districts. According to the estimates, approximately 20,000 vehicles utilize this corridor every day. As the results of the analysis show – although Black Rock Turnpike has a posted speed limit of 50 km/h (30 miles/h), the average speeds are between 55 – 65 km/h (35-40 miles/h). The road widths, speed, high traffic volume and numerous curb cuts create an unsafe and uninviting pedestrian environment. Click on this link to read more about the whole project.

    Analyzed area

However, what is truly remarkable about this analysis is the method how the data were recorded and analyzed. To be able to cover the whole corridor, which is roughly 1,3 km in length, up to 8 drones recording at the same time were needed! This allowed us to analyze the corridor as a complex scene, obtain the complete trajectories of vehicles for the whole analyzed route and create the detailed Origin-destination statistics! What were the key conditions for the successful analysis?

    1. top-down view position (bird’s eye perspective)
    2. space overlap – at least 10 % of overlap in the analyzed area from each side
    3. time overlap – all the drones started filming at the exact same time

Take a look at the video of raw output of 8 drone videos merged together:

    Complex traffic study in Netherlands

When carrying out a complex traffic study, it may be difficult to map the entire traffic situation, especially with traditional methods. Using a solution in form of traffic research from air with a drone and DataFromSky software, all movements are recorded down and analyzed to the smallest detail for unlimited data. In addition to junctions and road sections, the system is also suitable for parking areas, events, station environments or terminals.

The benefits of traffic research from the aerial video:

    • accurate data about traffic flow (counts), turning movements, speed, acceleration, travel time, stationary time (queing time) and many other traffic parameters
    • reliable, detailed research without influencing traffic behavior (inconspicuous solution)
    • full traffic research, almost without a human intervention
    • tool to improve traffic safety
    • perfect communication tool for organizations, citizens and politics

    Simple insight into all data
The knowledge in form of a aerial video with exact traffic parameters, speed measurements and identification of inappropriate or dangerous behavior is a very powerful communication tool for organizations, citizens and politicians alike. Moreover, it is fairly easy to evaluate, or use the results immediately in programs for traffic simulation models such as VISSIM.

Our partner in the BENELUX region – Roelofs – has recently carried out such complex traffic analysis accross the Netherlands using the drones to analyse the crossroads – especially roundabouts and signalized intersections.

Speed-based trajectories in the analyzed area

The results obtained thanks to DataFromSky were further used to create a simulation model in VISSIM, using the real data about: vehicle categories, speed and acceleration in crossroad, intensities on each lane, vehicle gap time and origin destination statistics. This is the most accurate simulation you can achieve by using real world data! If you want to get more detailed information about the analysis results, click here .

Realtime detection from a moving UAV?

Massive progress we have made in DataFromSky! As we keep on further development of DataFromSky solution, we can now boast great successes in the field of automatic detection from a moving UAV!

Imagine that you can directly detect and count the vehicles in traffic congestions while flying a drone over the traffic node! Impossible? Not anymore – since this moment, DataFromSky can detect and analyze vehicles from a flying UAV and provide information about the total number of vehicles and its category. Knowing such valuable information in real time, one can immediately predict the length of delay in the traffic congestion or the length of the tailback itself.
The success rate of the detection exceeds 95,67 % and the detection works on 12 828 CUDA cores – the image is evaluated in 200 ms.

See the video below, showing the raw data output from the detector – the data is not additionally modified in any way (no tracking, no filtration), however, even with the raw output we reached such a high accuracy of detection. Further data processing (tracking, etc.) will make the output even more accurate!
